Lions Youth Forum 2025: Social and Energy Transformation in a Former Heavy Industry Region

How industrial transformation impacts social developments

The forum will focus on the evolution of energy-intensive industries (Coal Mining, Steel production) to becoming climate-neutral, transforming old mining regions into local recreational areas for citizens and creating greener cities.

The lectures will encompass topics such as new hydrogen and fuel cell research, digital transformation, climate protection, energy transition and sustainable circular economy, as well as the transformation of old industrial sites and the impact of changing working conditions.

The region is globally known for going through massive changes over the past decades, including many negative impacts on citizens, from high unemployment rates to severe health issues from high risk working conditions. Over 15 Mio. residents live within a radius of 70km. The average income rate is lower than in most regions of Germany. Immigration has been integral part of the region since the 1950s.

The success of Agenda 2030 and the 17 sustainability goals will rest on more changes in the region. Germany is already on a good level for the goals:

  • 1) No Poverty
  • 2) Zero Hunger
  • 3) Good Health and Well-Being
  • 4) Quality of Education
  • 6) Clean Water and Sanitation
  • 8) Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • 16) Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
  • 17) Partnership for the Goals

Changes need to be made in order to reach the following goals:

  • 7) Affordable and Clean Energy
  • 12) Responsible Consumption and Production
  • 11) Sustainable Cities
  • 10) Reduced Inequalities
  • 5) Gender Equality
  • 9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • 13) Climate Action
  • 14) Life below Water
  • 15) Life on Land
